Tarrytown – Austin TX 78703
Tarrytown is a popular, affluent neighborhood in Austin, Texas between downtown Austin, Ladybird Lake, and Lake Austin. There are a wide variety of both classic historic Texas and bigger, more modern houses in this wealthy Central Austin neighborhood. Children in Tarrytown attend the highly acclaimed Casis Elementary or a private school of their choice.
Tarrytown was originally established as an official subdivision in 1915, but European settlers had already been living in the area since the mid 1800’s. Peter C. Taylor built a Lime Kiln in 1871 that provided construction materials for the city. The remains of that kiln can still be found in Reed Park.
Tarrytown’s amazing location is its best asset. The homes for sale are within a few miles of both downtown Austin, Lake Austin, Lady Bird Lake, Mount Bonnell, and many recreational activities like golf, hiking, biking, swimming, and tennis. Potential home buyers will find a wide variety of homes ranging from small restored cottages, to expanded mid-century homes, to modern sprawling estates. There is even a rare Medieval revival home.
Just on the edge of Tarrytown is one its most tranquil locations: the Mayfield Park and Nature Preserve. In 1909, the Chairman of the Railroad Commission and former Texas Secretary of State, Allison Mayfield, , purchased a bungalow topped with two gables on 23 acres as a summer vacation home for his wife and daughter. Mary, his daughter, married Milton Gutsch in 1918. They lived in the cottage together after 1922 and added three big porches and a maze of gardens, stone walls, ponds, and other features. A friendly gift of two peacocks were given to the Mayfields in 1935 and they eventually became a flock that can still be found on the property. In 1971, Mary Mayfield-Gutsch died and willed the property to the City of Austin for a public park. Today Mayfield Park is a beautiful nature preserve that features beautiful gardens, koi ponds, free-ranging peacocks, and other wildlife like deer.
