San Marcos Texas
San Marcos Texas History
San Marcos Texas is a beautiful and historic small Texas town in Hays County, south of Austin, Texas. The San Marcos River was discovered in 1689 by Alonso de Leon’s men. Some familes settled here at Villa de San Marcos de Neve in 1808 when still Mexico. By 1846 other settlers came to what was by that time Texas and by 1848 named San Marcos as the County Seat of Hays County. San Marcos is the site of Texas State University, historically known as Southwest Texas Normal School in 1899 and then Southwest Texas State University. In 1903 Southwest had 303 students. You will love the 1903 building Old Main with its red roof and look of a castle. My grandfather Dr. Carl William Raetzsch practiced medicine there on the San Marcos TX town square and owned the hospital before building a home in Seguin, TX and moving there in early 1917.

San Marcos Texas Entertainment
There is a lot of shopping, arts, dining and natural features to explore in San Marcos, Texas. As a child, I loved going to the attraction and resort Aquarena Springs in San Marcos and now as an adult still do. Now known as the Aquarena Center, glass bottom boat tours will still take you over the springs to see the beautiful plant and animal life in the cystal clear spring waters below. This is a great way to learn about Texas river resources and aquatic systems. The San Marcos Springs and river are fed by artesian outflow from the Edwards Aquifer. I recommend the book Images of America – Aquarena Springs by Doni Weber available at the Aquarena Center. As an amateur ecologist, I also hope to volunteer and Dive for Science in the Aquarena Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration Project one day. Spring Lake is a registered Archaeological site and hosts eight endangered species. I hope you too will learn more about Aquarena Center and take advantage of touring, education and volunteering there. Take a tour of Spring Lake in the glass bottom boats, donate to preserve them, get the dvd of the documentary movie River of Innocence about the San Marcos Springs. Contact Ted McKinnon at 512-245-8301 at Texas State for more information. Visit the non-profit Aquarena Center at 321 City Park Street, San Marcos, TX 78666 and on Twitter and Facebook too.
The San Marcos Premium Outlets and Tanger Outlet Center draw shoppers from all over. Historic Downtown San Marcos offers many dining and shopping experiences. Go see the Charles S. Cock house, the Merriman Cabin, Hays County Courthouse, LBJ Museum of San Marcos at 131 N. Guadalupe St, Calaboose African American Museum, the Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos at 211 Lee Street and more.
