French Place – Austin TX 78722
French Place – Cherrywood – Wilshire Woods
French Place is a small, triangular shaped neighborhood located in Central Austin east of IH 35, and north of Manor Road. the northeastern boundary is Airport Blvd. It is a very sought after hip pocket that people simply adore. French Place is actually part of the Cherrywood neighborhood and also includes Wilshire Woods to the north. French Place is located very close to UT, the University of Texas at Austin and many cool eateries and coffeehouses that are loved by many. Public transportation in the form of Capital Metro bus service is right there too. This vintage neighborhood has mainly old cottage style homes with very cool old home features like hardwood floors, built in the wall phone nooks and more. As in most mature neighborhoods there are lots of large shade trees lining the streets that add a lot of desirability to the neighborhood as well.

Fiesta, a multicultural grocery store is right at 38th and IH 35 in the strip center there. Hancock Center (I shopped there in 1960’s) with Freebird’s, Jason’s Deli, HEB, Sears and more is just across IH 35. The new Mueller development is nearby as well for shopping and services and the Dell Children’s Hospital.

French Place Area
I love French Place because I love old homes AND my Mom’s and Grandma’s house was nearby, west of IH 35 at 608 Texas Avenue just off 38 and 1/2 and Montrose near the old Hancock Golf Course. I have many fond memories of this area including being taken for a pretty dress at Hancock Center in the 1960’s. There was also a Swedish tamale lady that sold tamales out of her home on 38th and a 1/2 west of IH 35 and west of Hancock Golf Course. The old historic Oakwood Cemetary nearby just south of MLK is the oldest city owned cemetary in Austin.
