Accessible – ADA – Universal Design
This beautiful breezeway at a Leander, Texas home has a wheelchair ramp for accessible entry. Do you even see the wheelchair ramp?! Tastefully designed, this wheelchair ramp blends in to this Peter Pfeiffer, Barley and Pfeiffer, Austin, TX designed home that is an Aging In Place home as well as being extremely green insulated concrete form or ICF construction. The wheelchair ramp is flat, locally quarried stone over concrete that makes an easy transition from the crushed granite permeable driveway level up to the breezeway and home level. An easy transition for fully ambulatory people but also a beautiful way for those with disabilities to access the home.
Aging-in-Place is linked in with Universal Design
Homes built with Universal Design are just better built homes for anyone of any age or ability. Why not have wider doorways? It makes it easier for moving furniture in or out, carrying packages from a day out shopping, as well as being wide enough for comfortable use of wheelchairs and walkers. Why not have large, barrier free, flat entry showers with a shower seat, wall handholds and hand held shower heads? These showers are safer, prettier and more luxurious than the standard step up and in smaller shower.
In one day any one of us could become handicapped or paralyzed and need accessible features. Those of us blessed with full mobility now may lose it one day. I certainly hope not but lets have compassion for those who do!
